First, this moving piece from a gay Mormon couple. We don’t do religion the way they do in the States. I sincerely hope we never do - or, at least, we never go back to it because clearly they inherited their religious insanity from us. Cue the question on today’s University Challenge about why the people of the time thought the great fire of 1666 in London was punishment for the sin of gluttony? - Because it started in Pudding Lane and ended on Pie Corner. I am not making this up, promise. The difference is that over here, we know this is bonkers and over there, the Palin tendency thinks it’s still all true.
Very refreshing, therefore, to read of a gay Mormon couple who state that their ‘relationship with God evolved.’ I may not believe in their god (actually, I’m pretty sure it exists on the grounds that any entity in receipt of powerful human intent over time begins to exist - one day I’ll write out the Parable of the Giant Lilac Octopus that Lives Beneath the Sea - but I truly don’t think it has humanity’s best interests at heart). And as a former Mormon missionary who worked very hard for two years in Japan to share what I thought at the time was the ultimate and complete message of truth, hope, and happiness, I struggled a long time to reconcile being gay with being Mormon. Sadly, many Mormon gays and lesbians don’t prevail in that struggle. But thankfully, in large part because I’d found Tyler and was feeling for the first time the joy and wholeness that comes with allowing oneself to love and be loved, my personal convictions and relationship with God evolved. No omnipotent God, I became convinced, would deny any of us the opportunity to lead a life that is fully lived, fully shared, or fully loved.
And then, just to cheer us all up, news that Ellen de Generes’ partner is to take her name - reason given in court filing? ‘Applicant is taking on the name of her spouse.’ How cool is that?
